Survey among travellers from four countries

The research focused on overnight visitors from Germany, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom and targeted cities and regions with the potential for train travel to the Netherlands. Participants had either recently visited the Netherlands or planned to do so within the next year. The study combined quantitative data with qualitative insights to provide both statistics and a deeper understanding of motivations and experiences.

Key results at a glance

The results offer valuable insights into the travel behaviour of international visitors:

  • Among French travellers, the train is the most frequently chosen mode of transport. In the other countries, it ranks second.n is het meest gekozen vervoermiddel onder Franse bezoekers en staat in de andere landen op plek twee.
  • 80% of those who travelled by train rated their experience positively. Safety, price and comfort were frequently mentioned as reasons to choose the train.
  • Barriers to travel by train include price, long or inflexible travel times, and a lack of direct connections.

Compact summary available

The findings offer useful input for governments, marketing organisations, policymakers and transport partners to guide their marketing and policies towards more sustainable travel behaviour. While the full report is not publicly available, NBTC has compiled an accessible summary featuring the key insights.
