Data & Development Lab

In the Data & Development Lab, NBTC works together with partners to develop a knowledge platform about the visitor economy and the Netherlands as a destination. As a result of this collaboration, directly applicable insights have become available that structurally contribute to the sustainable development of (future) guest behaviour and the HollandCity strategy.

What is the Data & Development Lab?

The Data & Development Lab works together with various partners and data sources to develop a knowledge platform about the visitor economy and the Netherlands as a destination. This Lab is working on, amongst other things, a more up-to-date, frequent and detailed prediction of incoming tourism. Together with partners, projects are set up that focus on answering questions such as who to expect along with when and where to expect them, and the development of value propositions based on that information.

Starting projects on the basis of targeted issues

Various partners are already contributing to this knowledge platform by sharing data and insights with us for specific issues. In 2017 a project was started to get to know the German and Belgian repeat visitors better on the basis of this data. The initial insights from this show that, despite previous visits to the Netherlands, these visitors are still actively searching (primarily online) for information and inspiration about their intended destinations. This provides great opportunities for spreading these visitors out to destinations that seem less logical. We’ve also looked into what booking and web analytics could mean for our predictions.

By combining various data sources, such as search and booking data combined with viewed content on destination sites, we now have a more precise picture of the interests of German and Belgian repeat visitors, how they orient themselves to a stay in the Netherlands and where they stay. We’ve also learned that there are really good opportunities to predict on a monthly basis what type of international visitors we can expect when and where in our country.

We’ll develop the Data & Development Lab further during 2018 and start various new and innovative projects.

You can also participate

The Data & Development Lab is a flexible partnership in which multiple partners can participate in various forms with the goal of reliably sharing data and gaining new insights. Please contact Natasja Fortuin if you’d like to know more about the opportunities.
